한국 교회도 이제는 절반의 성(性)을 진지하게 성찰할 때다! 

2016년 5월 ‘강남역 살인 사건’으로 촉발된 우리 사회의 ‘여혐’ 논란은 최근의 ‘미투’(Mee Too) 운동에까지 이르렀다. 소위 중산층 지식인 여성의 전유물로 여겨지던 ‘페미니즘’에 대한 대중의 관심이 커졌고, 그 연장선에서 관련 서적도 여러 종 출간되어 인기를 얻었다. 바야흐로 페미니즘의 시대다. 정치·사회적 의제에 대해서는 늘 앞에서 이끌기보다 뒤따라가기 일쑤였던 기독교계에서도 페미니즘을 성찰할 시간이다.

 

기독교 신앙은 과연 어떤 방식으로 페미니즘과 만날 것인가?

공평과 자비의 하나님을 믿고 따르는 그리스도인이라면, 오랜 세월 차별과 억압의 그늘에서 살며 그것을 신앙의 한 모습인 양 받아들여 온 여성들의 삶에 한 번쯤 의문 또는 안타까움을 가져야 옳다. 그리고 무엇보다 성경은 여성에 대해, 여성과 남성의 관계에 대해, 여성의 역할에 대해 무어라 말하는지 좀더 주의 깊게 들여다봐야 한다. 그 과정에서 반드시 페미니즘과 페미니즘 신학으로 나아갈 필요는 없겠지만, 신앙을 넘어 신앙 안에서 여성과 남성의 오랜 권력 구조를 들여다볼 필요는 있다. 이 책은 기독교 신앙을 견지하며 하나님의 창조질서에 부합하는 ‘정당한’ 여성의 자리를 찾고자 내딛는 첫 발걸음이다.

 

어제와 오늘 한국 교회 안에서 여성의 자리는 무엇이었나?

송인규는 여성의 지위/위상과 관련해 영미 복음주의 내에 둥지를 틀고 있는 네 가지 입장을 소개한다. 각각 가부장제, 상보론, 평등론, 페미니즘으로 불리는 입장이 가정-교회-사회 내에서의 여성의 역할과 기능을 무엇이라 말하는지 가능하면 객관적으로 기술하고자 한다. 양혜원은 임상심리학자 루스엘런 조셀슨의 여성 정체성 이론 가운데 중요한 개념인 ‘패스메이커’(pathmaker)를 내세워 자신의 스토리를 엮는다. 백소영은 페미니스트 신학의 핵심을 잘 정련된 방식으로 설득력 있게 전달한다. 정재영은 여론조사 전문기관 ‘지앤컴리서치’에 의뢰해 온라인으로 실시한 설문조사 결과를 전반적으로 소개하며, 중간 중간 그런 설문 결과가 갖는 의미를 해설한다. 김애희는 이러한 설문 분석을 비판적으로 성찰하는 가운데 역시 나름대로의 제언을 잊지 않는다. 중요한 서지학적 정보로 꽉 채워진 정지영의 글은 1970년대부터 시작해 2010년대에 이르기까지 한국어로 출간된 주요 여성 관련 책자를 알차게 수록하고 있다. 

 

앞으로 우리에게 과연 어떠한 변화가 가능할 것인가?

이제 우리의 환경 가운데 막 태동한 페미니즘에 대한 관심과 열기가 그저 유행처럼 스쳐 지나가는 것이 되지 않기를 바란다. 우리의 지속적인 논의와 자기반성이 여성의 개인적·집단적 정체성 확립과 신앙 공동체의 변화 및 갱신에 어느 모로든 기여하기를 바란다. 또 이 책의 내용이 그런 원대한 변화의 발걸음을 내딛는 데 조금이라도 도움이 되기를 바란다.
