‘스펙트럼: 과학과 신앙’ 5호 『공룡과 기독교 신앙』은 지난 수십 년간 학문 영역은 물론 문화 영역에 이르기까지 인기를 얻고 있는 ‘공룡’의 존재와 멸종에 대해 과학적·신학적 고찰을 시도한다. 공룡 화석을 발견하고 연구해 온 역사를 살펴봄으로써 지금은 존재하지 않는 공룡이라는 생명체에 대한 이해를 넓히고, 나아가 공룡에 대한 편견 및 오해를 교정하고 전문가적 견해를 상식화하고자 한다. 또 공룡의 멸종에 대한 성경신학적 성찰을 통해 또 다른 측면에서의 공룡 알아 가기를 시도한다.


‘그리스도인이 공룡을 이해하는 3가지 방법’이라는 특집 주제 아래, 가장 먼저 앤서니 마틴은 “공룡 연구의 역사”라는 제하의 글에서 인류가 공룡을 어떻게 추적해 왔는지 고대로부터 20세기 후반까지의 발전적 양상을 포괄적으로 그려 준다. 국립과천과학관 이정모 관장은 “자연사 박물관에서 공룡을 만나다”에서 공룡에 대한 우리의 빗나간 선입견을 다룬다. 먼저 성경의 가르침과 과학적 발견 운운하며 공룡이 인간과 더불어 살았다는 주장부터 합당하지 않음을 지적하고 나서 공룡의 멸종, 쥐라기·백악기의 대표 공룡들, 공룡의 번성 이유 등을 쉽고 재미있게 설명한다. 밴쿠버기독교세계관대학원 원장 전성민 교수는 “공룡의 멸종에 대한 신학적 성찰”에서 서론으로 ‘영감’ ‘무오성’ 등 성경론의 주제를 밝힌 뒤 본격적으로 타락 이전의 죽음 문제를 다룬다. 여러 학자의 견해와 창세기 1-3장에 나타난 교훈을 설명하며 인간의 타락 이전부터 육식동물의 죽음이 있었다고 볼 수 있는 근거들을 차근차근 밝힌다. 그리고 개체의 죽음뿐 아니라 종의 멸종 또한 (다 이해할 수는 없지만) 하나님의 창조 목적에 포함된 것임을 추론할 수 있다고 말한다.


스펙트럼 연재물 ‘성경 속 과학의 수수께끼’에서는 “인간의 육식은 언제부터 시작되었나?”라는 제목의 글에서 송인규 한국교회탐구센터 소장이 이 주제에 맞물린 세 가지 이슈를 정리하고, 복음주의 그리스도인 사이에서 발견되는 네 가지 입장을 그 근거와 함께 선보인다. 북 리뷰 코너에서는 공룡을 주제로 한 책 이융남의 『공룡대탐험』과 스티브 브루사테의 『완전히 새로운 공룡의 역사』의 서평을 통해 공룡에 대한 새로운 탐색을 시도하고, 김기석의 『신학자의 과학 산책』, 윌리엄 카바노프와 제임스 스미스의 『인간의 타락과 진화』, 제임스 스미스 등의 『진화는 어떻게 내 생각을 바꾸었나?』 등의 과학 도서 서평은 과학과 신앙의 보다 농익은 만남을 선사한다.
